On 3rd May 2025, Lyla Story at 2 years old tragically passed away from DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis) less than 24 hours after being misdiagnosed.
DKA is a life-threatening complication that can occur when Type 1 Diabetes goes undiagnosed.
Lyla's father John has said: "Our daughter is sadly the product of a system that too often overlooks the signs of type 1 diabetes in very young children. Change is desperately required at primary care level."
The Lyla's Law campaign is calling for mandatory routine testing for type 1 diabetes in young children. And with over 120,000 signatures on its petition, the campaign has reached a parliamentary debate - but we still need your help, to spread awareness and support to raise funds and make sure no more families are dealt with devastation from a preventable death.
This law would require urine/blood testing during GP consultations where symptoms are present. Thus improving adherence to NICE guidelines, protecting young, non-verbal children and educate healthcare professionals and families about the signs of Type 1 Diabetes.
It's important to note the 4 clear symptoms (The 4 Ts) of type 1 diabetes:
- Toilet - excessive urination.
- Thirst - Constantly needing to drink water.
- Tiredness - Feeling lethargic and tired more than usual.
- Thinner - Losing weight without explanation.
At Diabetic Supply, we stand with Lyla's family and support the campaign. We've partnered together on a carefully curated collection with 50% of profits being donated to Breakthrough T1D UK. Shop the collection here → https://www.diabeticsupply.co.uk/collections/lylas-law-campaign
